Godavari Flood Threat Intensifies in Andhra Pradesh
The Godavari river flood intensity in Andhra Pradesh increased on 1 August 2026 due to heavy upstream rainfall. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) warned that the second warning level at the Dowleswaram Cotton Barrage was likely to be issued on the same day.
Godavari River Flood Warning System
The Godavari is one of India’s major peninsular rivers and flows through Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha before entering the Bay of Bengal. Flood warnings on the river are often linked to discharge levels at key monitoring points such as Bhadrachalam and Dowleswaram Cotton Barrage. At Dowleswaram Cotton Barrage, the first warning level is 10 lakh cusecs and the second warning level is 13 lakh cusecs. On 31 July 2026, inflow and outflow were over 5.3 lakh cusecs and rose to over 8.3 lakh cusecs by late Friday.
Key Water Levels and Affected Areas
On 31 July 2026 at 7 pm, the water level at Bhadrachalam stood at 49.8 feet, at Kunavaram at 16.3 metres, and at Polavaram at 10.2 metres. At Bhadrachalam, the river touched the second flood warning level of 48 feet at 3:48 p.m. and affected 49 villages in the Bhadrachalam division. In Mulugu district, the Godavari water level at Ramannagudem reached 75.47 feet at 2 p.m. on 31 July 2026, close to the third warning level of 75.82 feet. The rising water cut off 35 villages in the district.
Disaster Response and Barrage Operations
APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain alerted the district administrations of East Godavari, West Godavari, Konaseema, Kakinada, Eluru and Polavaram. People in low-lying and lanka villages were advised to move to safer locations. Three National Disaster Response Force teams and three State Disaster Response Force teams were positioned at Amalapuram, Rajamahendravaram, Chintoor, VR Puram and Jangareddygudem for emergency response. The Sammakka-Sarakka Barrage at Tupakulagudem received nearly 14.03 lakh cusecs on 31 July 2026, with an equal volume released downstream.
