Nauru Becomes Republic of Naoero

Nauru Becomes Republic of Naoero

The Pacific island nation of Nauru has officially adopted the name Republic of Naoero. The change was confirmed by President David Adeang on 31 July 2026 after a constitutional amendment was passed by the parliament in May 2026.

Name Change and Constitutional Process

Naoero is the indigenous name of the island and Nauru is a colonial alteration of that name. The government dropped plans for a national referendum and treated Naoero as the existing identity of the people rather than a new name requiring public approval. The official abbreviated name is now Naoero, the country code is NRO, and citizens are referred to as dei-Naoero. The United Nations received formal notification of the change on 26 June 2026 and has begun updating official records.

Language and Cultural Identity

The renaming is linked to the preservation of the Nauruan language, also called dorerin Naoero. UNESCO classifies the Nauruan language as severely endangered, which places it among languages with very limited intergenerational transmission. Nauru has a population of about 12,000 people and remains the world’s third-smallest nation after Vatican City and Monaco. The island state is a sovereign republic in the central Pacific Ocean.

Republic of Naoero in Geography and Statehood
