Former Army Chief General V.N. Sharma Passes Away

Former Indian Army Chief General Vishwa Nath Sharma passed away in the National Capital on 31 July 2026. He served as the 14th Chief of the Army Staff from 1 May 1988 to 30 June 1990 and was commissioned into the 16th Light Cavalry in June 1950.

Military Career

General V.N. Sharma became the first post-Independence commissioned officer to rise to the post of Army Chief. He served in the Indian Army for several decades and held senior command appointments before becoming Chief of the Army Staff.

Sumdorong Chu Stand-off

As Eastern Army Commander, General Sharma played a major role during the military stand-off with China at Sumdorong Chu in 1987. The Sumdorong Chu incident took place in the eastern sector of the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.

Family and Service Background

General Sharma belonged to a military family. His younger brother, Major Som Nath Sharma, was Independent India’s first Param Vir Chakra awardee, and the award is India’s highest wartime military decoration.
