India Signs Eight MoUs with Trinidad and Tobago
India and Trinidad and Tobago signed eight Memoranda of Understanding during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s two-day visit to the Caribbean nation on 8 and 9 May 2026. The agreements covered tourism, healthcare, infrastructure, Ayurveda, vector control, and digital support for education.
India-Trinidad and Tobago Relations
India and Trinidad and Tobago established diplomatic relations in 1962, the year Trinidad and Tobago became independent from the United Kingdom. Trinidad and Tobago is a twin-island republic in the southern Caribbean and a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Areas Covered by the MoUs
The signed MoUs included the solarisation of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs building in Trinidad and Tobago. The agreements also covered vector control, infrastructure upgrade of Nelson Island, and cooperation in tourism and healthcare.
Ayurveda and Education Cooperation
An Indian Chair on Ayurveda will be established at the University of the West Indies under the agreements. Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine from India and is recognised in India under the Ministry of Ayush.
Other Bilateral Initiatives
During the visit, S. Jaishankar handed over the first batch of 2,000 laptops to selected schoolchildren in Trinidad and Tobago. He also inaugurated an agro-processing facility for which India had provided machinery worth USD 1 million in the previous year.
Healthcare and Public Infrastructure
S. Jaishankar and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar jointly inaugurated Trinidad and Tobago’s National Prosthetics Centre in Penal. Prosthetics centres provide artificial limbs and related rehabilitation services for persons with limb loss.
