Elon Musk to Co-Lead Project Meridian

Project Meridian is a United States Department of War initiative announced on 1 October 2026 to study the future of warfare. The panel will be co-led by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich, and will operate under the supervision of the department’s Chief Technology Officer, Emil Michael.

Project Meridian and its mandate

Project Meridian has been assigned a 120-day deadline to map future warfighting domains, military capabilities and technology pathways. Its findings are due by 28 January 2027 and will include a public presentation as well as a classified annex for military leadership.

Key areas under review

The initiative will examine artificial intelligence, autonomy, directed energy, robotics and biotechnology. Its mandate covers military planning from under the Earth to beyond the Moon, which places emphasis on land, air, sea, space and sub-surface domains.

Elon Musk is the chief executive officer of SpaceX and Tesla. Palmer Luckey founded Anduril Industries, and Newt Gingrich served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
