Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma crowned Tooro Kingdom king

Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma was crowned the 13th King of the Tooro Kingdom in Uganda on 29 September 2026 at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City. He adopted the regnal name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I during the coronation ceremony.

Tooro Kingdom

The Tooro Kingdom is one of the traditional monarchies in Uganda. It is located in western Uganda and has its royal seat at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City. Traditional kingdoms in Uganda do not exercise political authority under the modern state system.

Succession and royal lineage

Kijanangoma succeeded King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died in August 2026 at the age of 34. The succession followed a dispute within the royal family after claims that the late king had left an heir in his 2022 will. Queen Best Kemigisa and Princess Ruth Komuntale were among those involved in the succession claim.

Selection process and public office background

A 21-member committee from the royal Babiito clan selected Kijanangoma for the throne. The Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council unanimously endorsed the decision on 15 September 2026. Before his coronation, Kijanangoma worked for more than two decades as a television news anchor and editor at the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation.
