China has over 100 million BPL people
While addressing the conference at Rio de Janeiro, the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held that China still has more than 100 million people living Below the Poverty Line (BPL) and stressed that China continued as a developing nation, despite it being the 2nd biggest economy in the world. He admitted that China’s per capita income ranks around 90th in the world and the low per capita income of China is a major challenge in promoting sustainable development.
As per last year’s World Bank report China’s BPL population who survived on less than $1.25 a day was about 150 million.
