Centre Approves Safety Equipment Support Under NAMASTE Scheme

The National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) is a Central Sector Scheme launched in July 2023 by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The scheme covers sewer and septic tank workers, Personal Protective Equipment kits, safety devices, and mechanised sanitation operations.

NAMASTE Scheme: Core Features

NAMASTE is designed for sanitation workers engaged in sewer and septic tank cleaning and related hazardous sanitation tasks. The scheme seeks to replace direct manual contact with faecal matter with mechanised equipment and safety devices. It also provides support for Emergency Response Sanitation Units in municipal corporations and districts.

Coverage, Equipment, and Financial Support

As of 14 July 2026, the scheme had profiled 90,942 sewer and septic tank workers, and 89,248 of them had been validated. By 15 July 2026, 87,037 Personal Protective Equipment kits had been provided to sanitation workers, and more than 76,000 workers had been covered under various health insurance schemes. As of April 2026, 753 safety devices had been dispatched to Emergency Response Sanitation Units. Financial assistance of up to ₹2,00,000 per Emergency Response Sanitation Unit is available on a reimbursement basis, subject to the appointment of Responsible Sanitation Authorities and worker training. The scheme also provides a capital subsidy of up to ₹5.00 lakh for the procurement of sanitation-related vehicles and equipment.

Implementation and Worker Safety Provisions

In July 2025, 45,871 PPE kits for Sewer and Septic Tank Workers and 354 Safety Devices Kits for Emergency Response Sanitation Units were issued to States and Union Territories. By 10 September 2025, 83,901 PPE kits for Sewer and Septic Tank Workers and 555 Safety Devices Kits for Emergency Response Sanitation Units had been issued to States and Union Territories. The scheme includes worker training, mechanised cleaning support, and safety infrastructure for sanitation operations in urban local bodies and districts. It is linked to sanitation worker welfare, occupational safety, and the use of protective equipment in hazardous cleaning work.
