Jharkhand Gets GI Tags for Four Handloom Products

Jharkhand Gets GI Tags for Four Handloom Products

Jharkhand received Geographical Indication tags for four traditional products in June 2026: Bhagaiya Silk, Kuchai Silk, Munda Jewellery, and Jharkhand Bamboo Craft. A Geographical Indication tag is a form of intellectual property protection used for goods that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, reputation, or characteristics linked to that place.

Geographical Indication in India

India grants GI registration under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The GI Registry functions under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, and the registration is valid for 10 years and can be renewed.

Bhagaiya Silk and Kuchai Silk

Bhagaiya Silk is a premium wild Tasar silk associated with the Bhagaiya belt in Godda district. Godda is often called the Silk City of Jharkhand, and Tasar silk is a type of wild silk produced by silkworms that feed on forest trees. Kuchai Silk is a forest-based Tasar silk from Seraikela-Kharsawan. It is linked with tribal weaving traditions, natural golden sheen, and organic production methods used by local artisans.

Munda Jewellery and Jharkhand Bamboo Craft

Munda Jewellery is handcrafted by the Munda tribal community and is known for geometric motifs and ceremonial use. Tribal jewellery in India often combines metal craft, cultural identity, and community-specific design traditions. Jharkhand Bamboo Craft uses bamboo from the Chhota Nagpur plateau. Rural artisans make utility and decorative items from bamboo, which is a fast-growing grass used widely in Indian handicrafts.

Institutional Support and Market Linkages

NABARD Jharkhand identified and documented the unique features of these products and supported producer organisation and value-chain development. NABARD is the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, a statutory institution established in 1982 for rural credit and development. GI registration can be used for branding, export promotion, tourism-linked marketing, and value addition for artisan products. Handloom and handicraft GI products are often linked with local skills, traditional knowledge, and regional identity.
