Cabinet Approves ₹10,000-Crore SME Growth Fund

The Union Cabinet approved a ₹10,000-crore commitment for the SME Growth Fund on 6 October 2026. The fund is meant to provide patient, growth-oriented equity capital to viable and scalable small and medium enterprises in India.

SME Growth Fund: Structure and Purpose

The SME Growth Fund will operate through an Alternative Investment Fund. It has been designed to address the shortage of long-term risk capital for growth-stage SMEs, while existing equity-focused funds often serve early-stage firms and micro enterprises.

The fund was announced in the Union Budget 2026-27. It will support enterprises with business viability and scalability across manufacturing, services, technology, innovation-driven sectors, and strategic value chains.

Areas of Support for Enterprises

The fund is intended to help SMEs expand manufacturing capacity, adopt advanced technologies, enter international markets, undertake acquisitions, and integrate into global value chains. A majority allocation will go towards manufacturing-focused SMEs.

Patient capital is a form of long-term investment that does not seek immediate returns. In the SME context, it is used for expansion, technology upgradation, and market diversification.
