BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Meeting Begins in Puri
The second technical meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction Group of BRICS is scheduled in Puri, Odisha, from 3 June to 5 June 2026. Representatives from 11 countries, including the BRICS members and new partner countries, are participating in the meeting at Taj Puri Resort.
BRICS and Disaster Risk Reduction
The BRICS grouping includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia in this meeting. India is chairing the BRICS presidency in 2026, and the first technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group was held virtually on 29-30 April 2026.
Odisha and Disaster Management
Odisha has a long record of cyclone management, disaster preparedness and early warning systems. The state was selected for the meeting because of its experience in disaster response and resilience planning.
Meeting Agenda and Venue
The discussions cover sustainable disaster risk reduction financing, resilient infrastructure, anticipatory response and the use of traditional knowledge in disaster resilience strategies. A three-tier security system has been put in place for the event, and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is scheduled to attend the inaugural event on 4 June 2026.
