India Post Rolls Out DigiPIN Digital Address System
India Post began the rollout of DigiPIN, a Digital Postal Index Number, on 27 May 2025 under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications. The system uses geo-coded digital addresses and is linked with India Post’s postal network for mail delivery, tracking, and location identification.
DigiPIN and its structure
DigiPIN is a 10-digit digital address system designed to work with latitude and longitude coordinates. It maps a location to a 4-metre by 4-metre grid unit and is intended to improve address precision in India’s postal framework. DigiPIN is an open-source and interoperable system, and it is designed to complement traditional addresses rather than replace them entirely. It is built for use in physical addressing, digital services, and geospatial applications.
Associated digital platforms
Two digital platforms, Know Your DIGIPIN and Know Your PIN Code, were launched on 27 May 2025. These platforms are part of India’s wider move towards digital address management and geospatial governance. India Post has also trialled DHRUVA, which stands for Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address. DHRUVA is an Address-as-a-Service platform that uses short digital IDs for mail delivery, including formats such as johndoe@dhruva.
Operational features and use cases
DigiPIN is linked with precise mail sorting, real-time tracking, and faster last-mile delivery. The system is also relevant for emergency services and e-commerce logistics, especially in rural and unstructured areas. The DigiPIN ecosystem was developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre, ISRO. The system uses geospatial data for address standardisation and location mapping.
