Border infrastructure remains critical in warfare
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the Border Roads Organisation Strategic Infrastructure Conclave in New Delhi on 16 July 2026. He stated that border infrastructure, including roads, tunnels, airfields and ports, will remain central to military operations in technology-driven warfare.
Border Roads Organisation
The Border Roads Organisation, or BRO, was established in 1960 for road construction in border areas and other strategic regions. It functions under the Ministry of Defence and builds roads, bridges, tunnels and related infrastructure in difficult terrain.
Strategic infrastructure in border areas
Strategic infrastructure refers to transport and support assets that assist defence movement, logistics and connectivity. Roads and tunnels are used for troop mobilisation, supply chains and access to forward areas, while airfields and ports support air and sea transport.
Major BRO projects
Rajnath Singh referred to the Atal Tunnel, the Umling La Pass road and the Sela Tunnel as examples of BRO engineering work. The Atal Tunnel is a road tunnel in Himachal Pradesh, the Umling La Pass road lies in Ladakh, and the Sela Tunnel is located in Arunachal Pradesh.
