Agnikul to Attempt Rocket Stage Recovery

Agnikul Cosmos is preparing Mission 02, which is planned as India’s first private-sector attempt at orbital-class rocket reusability. The mission involves the Agnibaan rocket, a launch vehicle developed for small satellite missions, and a first-stage booster recovery attempt through controlled descent and ocean recovery.

Rocket reusability refers to the recovery and reuse of launch vehicle stages after flight. In Mission 02, Agnikul plans to recover the first-stage booster of the Agnibaan rocket after separation and to test a controlled descent profile for the stage. The mission is also designed to demonstrate extended on-orbit capability of the upper stage after payload release. Agnikul has described this upper-stage concept as a convertible platform that can continue functioning after the primary mission phase.

Agnibaan is Agnikul Cosmos’s small satellite launch vehicle programme. The company has secured patents in India, the United States, and Europe for its convertible upper-stage architecture. Investment, Leadership and Cost Targets

Former ISRO Chairman S. Somanath joined Agnikul Cosmos as an observer on its board of directors on July 15-16, 2026. The company raised 17 million in November 2025 and was valued at 500 million during that funding round. Agnikul has stated that successful reusability could reduce launch costs by up to 80%. Cost reduction is a major objective in reusable launch vehicle development across the global space sector.
