PM Modi Receives Norway’s Grand Cross Honour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit in Oslo, Norway, on 18 May 2026. The award is the highest civilian honour of Norway and the highest grade within the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit.

Royal Norwegian Order of Merit

The Royal Norwegian Order of Merit was instituted in 1985 by King Olav V of Norway. It is awarded to foreign nationals and Norwegian citizens for meritorious service in the interests of Norway and for strengthening international relations.

Grand Cross as a Civilian Honour

The Grand Cross is the top class of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit. It is used in state and diplomatic honours systems and is placed above lower grades such as Commander and Knight in many chivalric orders.

India and Norway established diplomatic relations in 1947. Norway has cooperated with India in areas such as maritime affairs, climate action, fisheries, and development partnership.
