Why Marathon is called so?

In 490 BC, a Battle of Marathons had took place between the Greeks and Persians. The Greeks won this battle. To announce the message of Greek Victory, a Greek messenger Pheidippides was sent to Athens. He ran the entire distance from the battlefield to Athens exclaiming “We Have Won” in Greek language and collpased and died. The marathon name comes from this legend. Year 2010 marks the 2500 anniversary of Marathon.
