Syria, situated in West Asia, has emerged as a major hub for the production of Captagon. The region is also a focal point for illicit smuggling activities, facilitating the distribution of the drug across borders. 

Alleged Profiteers of Captagon Sales

There have been allegations that Bashar al-Assad, the President of Syria, along with his associates and family members, has profited from the sales of Captagon. The drug’s lucrative trade is believed to provide a financial lifeline amid Syria’s economic crisis. 

International Cooperation Efforts

To combat the smuggling of Captagon, Jordan and Iraq have joined forces with Syria. This collaborative effort aims to curb the illicit trade, identify production sites, and disrupt the supply chain. 

Prominence in 2014

The use of Captagon gained significant prominence in 2014 when reports surfaced of its widespread consumption by Islamic State (IS) fighters and Syrian combatants during battles. It was believed to enhance alertness and suppress appetite during grueling conflicts. 

Original Purpose of Captagon

Initially, Captagon was a legitimate medication developed in the 1960s by the German company Degussa Pharma Gruppe. It was intended for the treatment of attention deficit disorders, narcolepsy, and various other medical conditions. 

Effects of Amphetamine-Based Drugs

Amphetamine-based drugs like Captagon stimulate the central nervous system, providing a boost of energy, enhanced focus, increased alertness, and a sense of euphoria. However, these substances do not confer superhuman abilities or pain resistance. 

Side Effects of Amphetamines

Consumption of amphetamines can lead to various side effects, including loss of appetite, heart problems such as irregular heartbeat and increased blood pressure, high body temperature, memory loss, impaired thinking, and the risk of stroke. 

Military Usage during World War II

Amphetamines were employed by both Nazi Germany and the Allied forces during World War II. Nazi Germany supplied Pervitin (methamphetamine) to its soldiers, while the Allied forces provided Benzedrine (amphetamine sulfate) to enhance wakefulness and alertness among troops. 

Present-Day Usage in the US Air Force

Within the US Air Force, Dexedrine, a form of amphetamine, continues to be used to keep pilots awake and alert during long flights. Nevertheless, the usage of such substances has sparked controversy due to potential impairments in judgment and associated risks.
