What is the issue?
The issue started when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. Crimea is located in Ukraine. It holds Strait of Kerch. This strait is the only route for Russia to reach the Mediterranean countries. The strait connects Sea of Azov and Black Sea. It is a major trade route. The US and the western countries support Ukraine mainly to make shipping difficult for Russia. Economical competition and rivalry is the main reason behind this.
What are Russia’s demands?
Russia wants NATO to go back to where it was in 1997. This will make Poland and the Baltics vulnerable to Russian influence. These countries have joined in the support of the west. Also, Russia wants Georgia and Ukraine to be barred from joining NATO. In 2008, Russia invaded Georgia.
