UP Supplies Indigenous Cow-Milk Products to Indian Army
Uttar Pradesh has begun supplying indigenous cow-milk products, including Skyr, to the Indian Army as part of a dairy initiative linked with cow conservation, rural employment, and milk production. The products are prepared from milk of indigenous breeds such as Gir and Sahiwal, and the initiative uses advanced dairy technologies associated with Denmark and Iceland.
Skyr and Dairy Processing
Skyr is a premium dairy product that is high in protein and low in fat. It is a cultured milk product traditionally associated with Iceland, and modern processing methods have been adapted for Indian dairy production. The product supplied from Uttar Pradesh is marketed under the name Skyrrup.
Indigenous Cow Breeds in Dairy Economy
Gir and Sahiwal are among the best-known indigenous cattle breeds in India. Gir cattle are associated with Gujarat, while Sahiwal cattle are known for high milk yield and heat tolerance. Indigenous cow-based dairy units are used in several states for ghee, curd, paneer, and protein-rich milk products.
Operation-4 and State Support
The Uttar Pradesh government launched Operation-4 in the dairy sector on 18 May 2026. The programme focuses on indigenous cow breeds and provides subsidies for setting up dairy units. Under the initiative, the Mukhyamantri Swadeshi Gau Samvardhan Yojana and the Nandini Krishak Samriddhi Yojana support dairy units with two to 25 cows.
Employment and Rural Livelihoods
Engineer S.N. Dwivedi of Noida has developed a model that combines employment generation, cow conservation, and modern dairy technology. His unit reportedly rears more than 250 indigenous cows, and the milk products from this model are in demand by the Indian Army and in urban markets.
