HF Radar Installation to Boost Karaikal Coastal Monitoring

The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) is set to enhance coastal surveillance along Puducherry’s Karaikal region by installing a high-frequency (HF) radar system. The initiative aims to strengthen real-time ocean observation, improve weather forecasting accuracy, and support early warning systems for extreme events such as cyclones.

Strategic Locations Identified in Karaikal

NIOT has shortlisted two sites—Kilinjalmedu and Akkempettai—for the installation of the HF radar. These locations were selected after evaluating multiple options for their suitability in capturing accurate oceanographic data. The project forms part of a broader effort to expand ocean monitoring infrastructure along India’s eastern coastline.

Enhanced Coastal Observation Capabilities

The proposed HF radar system will be capable of measuring surface currents and waves up to 200 kilometres offshore. It will monitor parameters such as current speed, wave patterns, wind pressure, and temperature gradients. The radar can detect weather events within a radius of 80–100 kilometres, providing critical data for improved numerical weather prediction models.

Integration with Existing Radar Network

The Karaikal radar station will operate in pairing mode with an existing facility in Cuddalore, enhancing the accuracy and resolution of coastal current measurements. This integration is expected to significantly strengthen the observational network and provide more reliable data for scientific and operational use.
