UCIL Marks 60 Years of Uranium Mining at Jaduguda

The Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) began its Diamond Jubilee Year celebrations at Jaduguda on 4 October 2026. UCIL was incorporated in 1967 and operates as a Public Sector Enterprise under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The Jaduguda mine started operations in 1967 and was the first uranium mine in India.

UCIL and Uranium Mining in India

UCIL is responsible for uranium mining and processing in India. Uranium is a radioactive metal used as nuclear fuel in atomic power reactors. India’s uranium mining activity is linked to the domestic supply chain for the nuclear power programme.

Jaduguda Mine and Related Facilities

Jaduguda is located in Jharkhand and is known for underground uranium mining. The mine includes an 815-metre level, which is used for underground operations and related scientific activity. UCIL also has facilities at Narwapahar, which is another uranium mining area associated with its operations.

Technology Demonstration and Scientific Collaboration

During the celebrations, a Technology Demonstration Pilot Plant at the R&D centre in Jaduguda was visited. The proposed site of the Dark Matter Laboratory of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics is also planned at the 815-metre level of the Jaduguda underground mine. A Journalists’ Workshop was held at UCIL’s Information Centre at Narwapahar, and a DAE Technology Exhibition was organised for school students.
