Treesa-Gayatri Secure Medal at BWF World Championships

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand reached the women’s doubles semifinals at the BWF World Championships 2026 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on 21 August 2026. The unseeded Indian pair defeated China’s fourth-seeded duo Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian in 69 minutes to secure a World Championships medal for India.

Women’s Doubles at the BWF World Championships

The BWF World Championships is an annual badminton tournament organised by the Badminton World Federation. Women’s doubles is one of the five events in the championships, along with men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

India’s women’s doubles medal at the event is rare in the country’s badminton record. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand became only the second Indian women’s doubles pair to win a World Championships medal after Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won bronze in 2011.

India’s Medal Record in Badminton

India has won at least one medal at every edition of the BWF World Championships since 2011. The 2026 result extended this run to 12 consecutive tournaments.

Treesa Jolly, who is from Kannur in Kerala, became the first Malayali badminton player to win a World Championships medal since H.S. Prannoy won bronze in 2023.

Indian Pairs in the 2026 Tournament

India’s fifth-seeded men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty exited the tournament in the quarterfinals after a straight-games loss to China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang. Their scoreline was 18-21, 9-21.
