The French government announced that the 2020 edition of the world’s most famous cycling race, Tour de France has been postponed in view of the COVID-19 crisis.

About Tour de France

Tour de France is an annual men’s cycling event held as 21 day long stages over a period of 23 days. Of its 21 stages, the longest stage stretches for a distance of 218km. It is considered as the world’s most prestigious but also the most difficult cycle race.

Previous Cases

The Tour de France was cancelled during previous instances. It was not held during the World War I. It was also not held in 1946 as France was just emerging from the losses of World War II. The 2020 event is to be postponed as all public events in France have been cancelled at least until mid-July.

Grant Tours

Grand Tours are the 3 major cycling stage races in Europe. These are the Tour de France (held in July), Giro d’Italia (held in May) and Vuelta a Espana (late August- September). The Giro d’Italia is held in Italy but it also passes through other countries. The Vuelta a Espana is primarily held in Spain.
