Tata Emerges Lowest Bidder for ₹20,000 Crore Zorawar Light Tank Project

Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) emerged as the lowest bidder, or L1, in the Ministry of Defence competition for the Armoured Fighting Vehicle-Indian Light Tank (AFV-ILT) programme under Project Zorawar. The contract value is about ₹20,000 crore, and the project involves the development of a 25-tonne class light tank for the Indian Army.

Project Zorawar and AFV-ILT

Project Zorawar is linked to the AFV-ILT programme, which seeks a next-generation light battle tank for high-altitude deployment. The tank is named after General Zorawar Singh Kahlon, a 19th-century Dogra commander associated with military campaigns in the Himalayan region.

The light tank class is designed for areas such as Ladakh, where low oxygen levels and difficult terrain affect the mobility of heavier armoured vehicles. Main battle tanks such as the T-72 and T-90 are heavier platforms used by the Indian Army in armoured warfare.

Procurement under Make-I Category

The procurement is being carried out under the Ministry of Defence’s Make-I category. This category provides up to 70% government funding for design and development of prototypes in selected defence projects.

TASL has been asked to develop and demonstrate two operational light tank prototypes within 130 weeks. The Make-I framework is used for indigenous design and development of defence equipment in India.

Bid Process and Competition

The selection followed a three-year evaluation of technical and commercial bids submitted by five corporate entities. Mahindra Defence Systems finished as the second-lowest bidder, or L2, and was also assigned prototype development work.

The Production Order was delayed after objections from competitors, and those objections were later dismissed by the Indian Army and the Ministry of Defence. The project is part of India’s effort to expand domestic defence manufacturing through private-sector participation.
