Tamil Nadu Launches Annapoorani Super Six LPG Scheme

Tamil Nadu announced the Annapoorani Super Six Scheme in the State Assembly on 24 August 2026 for domestic LPG cylinder reimbursement to eligible families. The scheme is linked to the State’s public distribution and welfare framework and is scheduled for launch on Pongal Day in January 2027.

Scheme Features

The scheme provides reimbursement for domestic LPG cylinders after purchase, and the subsidy is credited directly to the bank accounts of beneficiaries. The operational model uses direct benefit transfer, which is a cash transfer method used in several Indian welfare schemes. The government fixed eligibility for families with annual income below ₹2.5 lakh, middle farmers, marginal farmers, and families of persons with disabilities. The annual outlay for the scheme is estimated at ₹4,000 crore.

Free LPG Cylinder Schemes in India

Free or subsidised LPG supply has been used by several State and Union Government welfare programmes in India. Liquefied petroleum gas is a cooking fuel composed mainly of propane and butane, and it is distributed in domestic cylinders through the public and private supply network. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, launched in 2016, is a major Central scheme for providing LPG connections to women from poor households. State governments have also used LPG subsidy schemes to reduce household fuel expenditure and improve access to clean cooking fuel.
