Stanzin Tsangyang Becomes Kargil’s First Woman Officer

Stanzin Tsangyang was commissioned into the Indian Army on 5 September 2026 at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. She became the first woman officer from the Zanskar region of Ladakh and was part of a batch of 342 cadets who completed training at the academy.

Officers Training Academy

The Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai is one of the principal training institutions of the Indian Army. It trains Short Service Commission officers for the Army and has been a major commissioning centre for women officers in India.

Zanskar and Kargil District

Zanskar is a high-altitude region in Ladakh known for its remote terrain and sparse population. At the time of her enrolment, Zanskar was part of Kargil district, and it was later notified as a separate district in 2026.

Education and Entry into the Armed Forces

Tsangyang studied for 14 years at Lamdon Model School in Leh, Ladakh. She later pursued Mechanical Engineering at Tezpur University in Assam under a scholarship and joined the National Cadet Corps during her studies.

Her father, Tundup Tsering, is a schoolteacher, and her mother is Rigzin Ladol. Her parents travelled from Ladakh to Chennai to attend the commissioning parade.
