New Himalayan Plant Named After Nirmal Purja

A newly identified Himalayan flowering plant has been named Impatiens nimspurjai in honour of Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja. The species was formally described in a 57-page study published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE and was first encountered in western Myagdi district of Nepal in 2011.

Taxonomy and nomenclature

Impatiens nimspurjai belongs to the genus Impatiens, a large flowering plant group in the family Balsaminaceae. The genus is known locally in Nepal as tiuri, and many species in this group are associated with moist habitats in the Himalayan region.

Discovery and scientific description

Botanist Bhakta Bahadur Raskoti first observed the plant in 2011, after which morphological and molecular studies continued for more than a decade. The formal description of the species was credited to botanists Bhakta Bahadur Raskoti and Rita Ale, who documented the plant as new to science.

Habitat and distribution

The species grows on humid slopes and forest margins at elevations of about 2,800 to 2,900 metres. The plant was recorded from the western Myagdi district of Nepal, a Himalayan area known for high-altitude biodiversity.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Impatiens is a genus of flowering plants in the family Balsaminaceae.
  • Myagdi district is located in western Nepal and lies in the Himalayan region.
  • Broad Peak is one of the world’s highest mountains and is located in Pakistan.
  • Scientific species names often use Latinised forms and may honour persons, places, or distinctive features.

Legacy and naming rationale

The species name nimspurjai combines “Nims Purja” and “jai”, a Nepali word linked with jasmine. The naming was linked to Purja’s mountaineering record and his environmental work through the Nimsdai Foundation, including the “Big Mountain Cleanup” campaigns.
