South Asia Clean Energy Forum 2023

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) organized the South Asia Clean Energy Forum (SACEF) from May 2-4, 2023. The forum aimed to promote regional cooperation and support clean energy initiatives in South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Nepal.

Meeting the Challenges of the Energy Sector in South Asia

The region of South Asia is confronted with substantial difficulties in meeting the surging energy needs while switching to energy sources that are sustainable, reliable, affordable, and secure. SACEF established a forum that facilitated constructive and solution-based conversations, which would propel the energy industry and assist in achieving a more sustainable future for the citizens of the region.

Regional Cooperation for a More Sustainable Future

During the event, the US government reiterated its commitment to fostering regional stability, deepening strategic partnerships, and supporting individual sovereignty and regional connectivity. The forum provided an opportunity for the United States and South Asian nations to work together to transform climate challenges into opportunities to build a safer, more secure world.

The importance of cross-border cooperation and bringing together initiatives to translate change was highlighted. Initiatives such as a green transition in technology, end-use, and supply-side are critical. While the conference focuses on the engagement side of cross-boundary initiatives, NITI Aayog plays a fundamental role in state-level initiatives in India.

The Importance of Regional Cooperation in Achieving Shared Goals

The forum has marked a significant milestone in the region’s power sector as representatives from South Asian governments, power utilities, regulators, development organizations, financial institutions, clean energy project developers, technology providers, research institutions, capacity-building organizations, civil society organizations, and emerging clean energy professionals came together to share ideas and collaborate on innovative solutions to address the pressing challenges of the clean energy transition in South Asia.

The forum featured eight technical sessions facilitating knowledge exchange and partnerships among global and regional clean energy stakeholders and experts. A “Partners’ Day” event was held to kickstart building partnerships among stakeholders.
