Solomon Pappaiah, Tamil Scholar and Orator, Dies at 90

Solomon Pappaiah, born Sundaram Solomon Pappaiah on 22 February 1936, died on 11 September 2026 in Madurai at the age of 90. He was a Tamil scholar, orator, professor, and cultural figure associated with Tamil literature, debate programmes, and public speaking.

Early Life and Academic Career

Solomon Pappaiah was born in Sathangudi near Madurai in Tamil Nadu. He taught Tamil at The American College, Madurai, for more than three decades and headed the Department of Tamil from 1961 to 1994.

Pattimandram and Tamil Debate Tradition

Pattimandram is a traditional Tamil debate format in which speakers discuss a topic through structured arguments. Solomon Pappaiah popularised this format on television by using everyday social issues and by presenting debates in a style accessible to a wider audience.

He moderated more than 12,000 debate programmes across different platforms during his career. Pattimandram remains a recognised form of Tamil public discourse and is associated with literary, cultural, and social themes.

Awards, Film Appearances, and Public Life

Solomon Pappaiah received the Kalaimamani award in 2000 and the Padma Shri in 2021. The Padma Shri is India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, and the Kalaimamani is a Tamil Nadu state award for arts and literature.

He also made cameo appearances in Tamil films such as Mudhalvan, Boys, and Sivaji: The Boss. His wife, Jeyabai, died on 12 January 2025, and he is survived by a son and a daughter.
