India-Sri Lanka Ties Deepen During Vice-President Visit
Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan visited Sri Lanka on April 19, 2026, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Vice-President to the island nation. During his two-day visit to Colombo, he met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and discussed key bilateral issues, including housing projects, Cyclone Ditwah rehabilitation, and the long-pending fishermen dispute between the two neighbours.
Focus on Neighbourhood First Policy
Mr. Radhakrishnan highlighted India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, which places priority on strong relations with neighbouring countries. He stressed the importance of development-focused cooperation and stronger people-to-people ties. Officials stated that both leaders held productive discussions aimed at deepening the multifaceted India–Sri Lanka partnership, built on shared history, civilisational links, and regional cooperation.
Indian Housing Project and Cyclone Aid
A major focus of the visit was the Indian Housing Project for Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. During a community event in Colombo, the Vice-President virtually handed over houses under the third phase of the project. With this, the total number of houses built with Indian assistance reaches 50,000, while another 10,000 houses are under construction in the fourth phase.
The leaders also reviewed projects funded under India’s $450 million package for Cyclone Ditwah-affected areas. These projects support reconstruction and rehabilitation, especially in regions with large Indian-origin Tamil populations.
Fishermen Issue Discussed Humanely
Both sides discussed the sensitive fishermen issue in the Palk Strait, where arrests frequently occur due to accidental crossing of maritime boundaries. India and Sri Lanka agreed that the matter should be handled with a humanitarian approach while protecting the livelihoods of fishing communities on both sides.
This issue remains one of the most challenging aspects of bilateral relations because the Palk Strait is a rich fishing zone used by fishermen from both India and Sri Lanka.
