Around 150 to 200 rare Indian Skimmer birds were recently spotted at Lower Manair Dam in Telangana, a first for the region. The Indian Skimmer is native to South Asia and belongs to the genus Rynchops in the family Laridae. Its scientific name is Rynchops albicollis, and it feeds by skimming low over water to catch fish. The bird is mainly found in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, with some populations in Nepal and Myanmar. It prefers larger, sandy rivers, lakes, and estuaries, with an estimated population of 2,450-2,900 individuals. The Indian Skimmer has a black upper body, white underbelly, and a long orange beak. Its conservation status is classified as endangered by the IUCN.

The Telangana government aims to develop Musi riverbanks for commercial use, inspired by South Korea’s Great Hangang (Han River) project. The Han River is South Korea’s fourth-longest river, flowing through Seoul. It originates from the Namhan and Bukhan rivers in eastern South Korea. The river flows through Seoul and empties into the Yellow Sea. Telangana’s plan was to attract private firms to develop riverfronts similar to the Han River model.

A rare Indian Painted Frog, Uperodon taprobanicus, was recently spotted in Telangana’s Kawal Tiger Reserve, a significant find outside its usual habitats. This species belongs to the Microhylidae family and is found in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, southern and eastern India, and Nepal. Notable for its striking coloration and smooth body, the frog is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and is common in Sri Lanka and India’s Western and Eastern Ghats.

The SAM pilot models were recently launched in Telangana as part of the AMRUT scheme. SAM is a sustainable urban water management technique involving shallow borewells to pump and recharge groundwater. It aims to raise water tables through rainfall recharge. The initiative is linked to the National Aquifer Mapping and Management program (NAQUIM), which characterizes aquifers and develops groundwater management plans.

IFFCO partners with Marut Dronetech for Drone-as-a-Service (DAAS) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, aiming to boost rural entrepreneurship and youth engagement. The collaboration targets to cover five lakh acres for agri input spraying. Marut Dronetech will deploy drones to dispense IFFCO agri-products. DAAS facilitates affordable drone tech access for farmers through rural entrepreneurs, promoting accessibility.

President Droupadi Murmu appointed Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the additional charge of Telangana Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, replacing Tamilisai Soundararajan, who resigned on March 18. Soundararajan, previously BJP Tamil Nadu unit president, contested but lost in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu, with 39 seats, are scheduled for April 19, 2024.
