Australian Paralympic athlete Nicholas Hum passed away on 15 December 2025 at the age of 32. Nicholas Hum was a Paralympic bronze medallist and one of Australia’s most respected long jumpers, with a career spanning over a decade. He made his international debut at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch and competed in three Paralympic Games and five World Para Athletics Championships. He held the Australian long jump T20 record at 7.39 meters and last competed at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

East Bengal Football Club (FC) won the inaugural South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Club Championship 2025. They defeated Nepal’s APF (Armed Police Forces) 3-0 in the final at Dasrath Stadium, Kathmandu. With this victory, East Bengal became the first Indian women’s club to win an international tournament.

Alpine SG Pipers, led by Indian Grandmasters R Praggnanandhaa and Anish Giri, won the Global Chess League (GCL) 2025 Season 3 title in Mumbai. They defeated defending champions Triveni Continental Kings in the finals, winning 4–2 in the first match and 4.5–1.5 in the second to secure their maiden GCL title.

Josh Tongue became the first England bowler this century to take a five-wicket haul in a men’s Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He claimed figures of 5/45 during Australia’s first innings of 152 all out in the Boxing Day Test. Tongue’s effort ended a 27-year gap since Darren Gough and Dean Headley last achieved a five-for at the MCG in 1998. This was Tongue’s best Test bowling performance, surpassing his previous best of 5/66 against Ireland at Lord’s in 2023. He dismissed three of the top four Australian batters and was on a hat-trick in Australia’s second innings after taking the last two wickets.

Indian tennis player Vaidehi Chaudhary won the Women’s Singles title at the W35 Solapur Tennis Tournament in Maharashtra. The 25-year-old, seeded sixth, defeated Japan’s Michika Ozeki in a three-set final, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, after losing the first set. In the semifinals, Vaidehi defeated national champion Vaishnavi Adkar to reach the final. This victory is her fourth career International Tennis Federation (ITF) singles title and her first since June 2024, when she won the W35 Taipei Formosa Cup in Chinese Taipei.

Ayush Mhatre has been named captain of India’s ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2026 squad, with Vihaan Malhotra as vice-captain. The tournament will be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia from January 15 to February 6, 2026. India, five-time champions (2000, 2008, 2012, 2018, 2022), are in Group A with New Zealand, USA, and Bangladesh.

The 11th India International Youth Sailing Championship 2026 takes place from 4th to 10th January at Chennai Port. The championship was officially launched in Chennai. It is India’s longest-running and most consistent international youth sailing regatta. 117 sailors from 13 countries competes across five elite youth classes.

Sjoerd Marijne has been appointed as the chief coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, announced by Hockey India. The Dutch coach previously led India to a historic fourth-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, India’s second Olympic appearance in over 36 years. His first major assignment will be the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana, from 8th to 14th March 2026.

Atiqa Mir, 11-year-old Indian racing prodigy, debuted in the junior S125 category (age 12–14) after moving up from the mini category (age 8–12). She became the first Indian to secure a top-five finish globally on debut in round seven of the International Association of Karting Manufacturers (IAME) UAE Karting Championship at Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi. Atiqa finished 5th out of 35 drivers in a male-dominated grid, missing the podium by only 0.4 seconds. She is also the first female in IAME UAE Championship history to register a top-five finish.

Anahat Singh, India’s top-seeded squash player, won the silver medal in the women’s U-19 final at the British Junior Open Squash Championships. The final was held at the University of Birmingham, England. She lost to France’s Lauren Baltayan with scores 9-11, 11-7, 3-11, 9-11. In the semifinals, Anahat had defeated Egypt’s Malika El Karaksy to reach the final.
