Noida golfer Sukhman Singh won the IGU (Indian Golf Union) 124th Amateur Golf Championship of India, the world’s longest-running amateur matchplay event. He defeated Harman Sachdeva with a commanding 7UP lead after 29 holes of the 36-hole final. Sukhman went all square till the 6th, then 4UP after 12 holes and 2UP after 18 holes, maintaining pressure with strong driving and putting.

The first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) logo, theme song, and mascot were unveiled at Late B. R. Yadav Sports Stadium, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. The Games are scheduled from 14 February 2026. Chhattisgarh is the first state to host these Games. Morveer is the official mascot of the inaugural edition. The mascot ‘Morveer’ combines ‘Mor’ (mine/our own) and ‘Veer’ (courage/valour), symbolising tribal pride and spirit. The Games are organised jointly by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India, Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations, and Chhattisgarh state committee.

Josh Tongue became the first England bowler this century to take a five-wicket haul in a men’s Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He claimed figures of 5/45 during Australia’s first innings of 152 all out in the Boxing Day Test. Tongue’s effort ended a 27-year gap since Darren Gough and Dean Headley last achieved a five-for at the MCG in 1998. This was Tongue’s best Test bowling performance, surpassing his previous best of 5/66 against Ireland at Lord’s in 2023. He dismissed three of the top four Australian batters and was on a hat-trick in Australia’s second innings after taking the last two wickets.

Varanasi will host the 72nd Senior National Volleyball Championship from January 4 to 11, 2026. The championship will be held under the Khelo India initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will be the first national-level volleyball event of this scale to be organised in the Purvanchal region. Two mascots reflecting local culture have been chosen, namely ‘Nandu’ inspired by Nandi and ‘Neera’ representing the Ganga Dolphin. A total of 73 teams from across India will participate, with more than 1,000 players competing in the tournament.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Doug Bracewell has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket at the age of 35. He represented New Zealand in 28 Tests, 21 One Day Internationals, and 20 Twenty20 Internationals during his 12-year international career. Bracewell finished his international career with 120 wickets and 915 runs across formats for the Black Caps. He played a decisive role in New Zealand’s memorable Test victory over Australia in Hobart in 2011, their last Test win against Australia.

Fourteen-year-old Amieyra Khoslla won the Gold Medal in Youth Girls (Under-17) at the 29th National Sport Climbing Championship (NSCC) 2025 held in Bengaluru from 26–29 December. She competed in the bouldering discipline, showing excellent strength, technique, and calm mindset. In the qualification round on 27 December, she scored a perfect 100.0, topping all four bouldering problems. The championship was organised by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) with the General Thimayya National Academy of Adventure (GETHNAA).

Notes:
Former world billiards champion Manoj Kothari passed away at 67 in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu due to a massive cardiac arrest. Kothari won the World Billiards Championship in 1990. He was a 16-time State Champion in his career. In 2005, he received the Dhyan Chand Award, India’s highest lifetime achievement award in sports. In 2025, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India.

The 2nd Khelo India Beach Games officially began on 5th January 2026 at Ghoghla Beach in Diu. More than 2,100 athletes are participating across eight different sports in the event. The games are being organised by the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, under the technical supervision of the Sports Authority of India and national sports federations. The event will be held from 5th to 10th January 2026. There are six medal sports: Beach Soccer, Beach Volleyball, Beach Sepak Takraw, Beach Kabaddi, Pencak Silat, and Open Water Swimming. Two events, Mallakhamb and Tug of War, are included as non-medal events.

The 69th National School Games started in Punjab on 6th January at Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana. The games feature young athletes from across India, competing in Judo (Under-14 boys & girls), Taekwondo (Under-14 girls), and Gatka (Under-19 boys & girls). Teams from various States and Union Territories, including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Andhra Pradesh, and North East regions, are participating. Around 1,000 sports persons are taking part in the event. The Games will conclude on 11th January 2026.

Australia women’s cricket captain Alyssa Healy has announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. The 35-year-old cited mental fatigue and recurring injuries as reasons for her decision. She confirmed the home series against India in February–March will be her final assignment for Australia. Her final international appearance will be the one-off Test against India in Perth. Alyssa Healy retires as one of the most successful women cricketers and an eight-time World Cup winner.
