Recently, Bastar Olympics in Chhattisgarh has been officially given national status as ‘Khelo India Tribal Games’. It is part of the “Promotion of Rural and Indigenous/Tribal Games” component under the Khelo India Scheme. Traditional tribal sports like Mallakhamb, Kalaripayattu, Gatka, Thang-Ta, Yogasana, and Silambam are already supported under this scheme. Khelo India Scheme was launched in 2016–17 to promote sports participation and excellence across India. The scheme is extended till 2025–26 with a total budget of ₹3790.50 crore.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar unveiled the mascot of Asia Rugby Under-20 (Sevens) Championship on 3rd August 2025. The Championship will be held for the first time in Bihar at Rajgir Sports Complex on 9th and 10th August. It is a seven-member team event featuring both Men’s and Women’s teams from Asia. Top 8 Asian countries including India, Hong Kong, China, UAE, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Nepal will participate. The mascot named Ashoka, a rabbit, symbolizes agility which is vital in rugby.

India’s Namrata Batra made history by winning a silver medal in the women’s 52 kg Wushu final at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China. The 24-year-old, a four-time national champion and 2024 Asian Championships silver medallist, lost 2-0 to China’s Mengyue Chen in the final. This was India’s first-ever medal in Wushu at the World Games. It was also India’s second medal at the 2025 edition after Rishabh Yadav’s bronze in men’s compound archery.

More than 500 humanoid robots from 16 countries, including Japan, took part in the World Humanoid Robot Games 2025 in Beijing, China. The four-day event featured competitions in sports, tasks, and real-world scenarios. Robots competed in 26 events such as track and field, soccer, dancing, and kickboxing. A robot completed the 100-meter sprint in 21.5 seconds, showing remarkable speed. Robots also showed agility in kickboxing by regaining balance after hits. Some robots collapsed in soccer and collided during the 400-meter relay. The event highlighted both rapid progress and challenges in humanoid robotics.

On 18 August 2025, world number three Iga Swiatek won the 2025 women’s singles title in the tennis tournament at Cincinnati Open. She defeated world number seven Jasmine Paolini by 7-5, 6-4 in the final. Earlier, Swiatek had never gone beyond the semifinals in six previous attempts at Cincinnati. She lost semifinals to Coco Gauff in 2023 and Aryna Sabalenka in 2024. Against Paolini, Swiatek made a comeback after trailing 0-3 in the first set, winning in 56 minutes. She hit eight aces and secured victory despite Paolini breaking her serve twice. This is her 24th career singles title.

Ahmedabad will host three major international sports events in 2025. Events include the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship from August 24 to 30, the Asian Aquatics Championship in September–October, and the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup Qualifiers from November 22 to 30. Elite athletes from more than 29 countries will participate. Competitions will take place at Naranpura Sports Complex and The Arena by TransStadia. These events highlight Gujarat’s growing profile as a global sports hub. The development is supported by modern infrastructure and the Sports Policy 2022–27. Ahmedabad is also set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Madhya Pradesh (MP) topped the medal tally at the first edition of Khelo India Water Sports held at Dal Lake, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. MP won 18 medals, including 10 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze, and claimed the overall championship trophy. Odisha and Kerala secured second (10 medals) and third (7 medals) positions, while Chhattisgarh won a silver medal. MP dominated kayaking and canoeing, winning all four golds on the penultimate day and six more on the final day.

Star Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a Gold medal at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad. She marked a triumphant return to competitive action after previous international events. Chanu lifted a total of 193 kilograms to set new Commonwealth Championship records in snatch, clean and jerk, and total. She lifted 84 kilograms in snatch and 109 kilograms in clean and jerk, both setting new records. She finished first on the women’s 48-kilogram podium. The victory secured her direct qualification for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

India will host the Boxing World Cup (men’s and women’s) for the first time from November 13-24, 2025 in Greater Noida. The World Boxing Congress will be held on November 23, 2025 in Greater Noida. The event will be held at Vijay Pathik Sports Complex with around 450 boxers from at least 80 countries and 150 officials. India previously hosted Women’s World Boxing Championship in 2018 and 2023 and World Boxing Congress in 2017.

National Sports Day 2025 is celebrated in India from August 29 to 31 under the Fit India Mission, led by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The event honours hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary. Celebrations follow the theme “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main”, promoting at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity to fight lifestyle diseases. The programme promotes Olympic values: Excellence, Friendship, Respect, and Paralympic values: Courage, Determination, Inspiration, Equality.
