Arjun Erigaisi and Koneru Humpy won bronze medal at the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in Doha. Arjun Erigaisi scored 9.5 points in the open section, finishing just behind world champion Magnus Carlsen. He became the second Indian male, after Viswanathan Anand, to podium at a World Rapid Championship. In the women’s section, Koneru Humpy scored 8.5 points, tied with Zhu Jiner (China) and Aleksandra Goryachkina (Russia). Humpy has previously won gold at the World Rapid Championship in 2019 and 2024.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Doug Bracewell has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket at the age of 35. He represented New Zealand in 28 Tests, 21 One Day Internationals, and 20 Twenty20 Internationals during his 12-year international career. Bracewell finished his international career with 120 wickets and 915 runs across formats for the Black Caps. He played a decisive role in New Zealand’s memorable Test victory over Australia in Hobart in 2011, their last Test win against Australia.

Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi lost the semifinal to Uzbek player Nodirbek Abdusattorov at the World Blitz Championship in Doha. He secured the bronze medal in the tournament. Defending champion Magnus Carlsen reached the final after defeating Fabiano Caruana 3-1 in the other semifinal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Arjun Erigaisi for his bronze medal in the Blitz Championship and his recent FIDE Rapid Chess Championship bronze.

The 11th India International Youth Sailing Championship 2026 takes place from 4th to 10th January at Chennai Port. The championship was officially launched in Chennai. It is India’s longest-running and most consistent international youth sailing regatta. 117 sailors from 13 countries competes across five elite youth classes.

The 69th National School Games started in Punjab on 6th January at Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana. The games feature young athletes from across India, competing in Judo (Under-14 boys & girls), Taekwondo (Under-14 girls), and Gatka (Under-19 boys & girls). Teams from various States and Union Territories, including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Andhra Pradesh, and North East regions, are participating. Around 1,000 sports persons are taking part in the event. The Games will conclude on 11th January 2026.

Anahat Singh, India’s top-seeded squash player, won the silver medal in the women’s U-19 final at the British Junior Open Squash Championships. The final was held at the University of Birmingham, England. She lost to France’s Lauren Baltayan with scores 9-11, 11-7, 3-11, 9-11. In the semifinals, Anahat had defeated Egypt’s Malika El Karaksy to reach the final.

Recently, the 5th LG Cup Ice Hockey Championship concluded at Biamathang Ice Hockey Ground in Kargil, Ladakh. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) won the men’s title by defeating the Ladakh Scouts of the Indian Army. The final was decided in five minutes of extra time with a decisive winning goal. The tournament also featured speed skating competitions. An exhibition curling match between Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh teams added attraction.

Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2026 will be held in Leh from January 21 to 26, 2026, with the opening ceremony on January 21. More than 1,000 participants, including athletes, coaches, and technical officials, will take part in the event. The main venues are Nawang Dorjan Stobdan (NDS) Stadium, the Army rink, and frozen Gupukh’s Pond. 472 athletes will compete in ice sports, including skating and hockey, with figure skating introduced this year as an Olympic event. Haryana (62 athletes), Himachal Pradesh (55 athletes), and Ladakh (52 athletes) have the largest representation among 21 states and union territories.

The Asian Rifle and Pistol Shooting Championships 2026 started on 2 February at Dr Karni Singh Shooting Ranges, New Delhi. The event will last two weeks with elite athletes from across Asia. Events cover 10m, 25m, and 50m rifle and pistol disciplines. Seventeen countries are participating in the championship.

Haryana Thunders won the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) 2026 title after defeating Delhi Dangal Warriors 5-4 in a thrilling final at Noida Indoor Stadium. Scores were tied 4-4 after eight bouts; the final women’s 62kg match decided the championship. Paris Olympic silver medallist Iryna Koliadenko secured technical superiority to clinch victory for Haryana Thunders.
