National Sports Day 2025 is celebrated in India from August 29 to 31 under the Fit India Mission, led by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The event honours hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary. Celebrations follow the theme “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main”, promoting at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity to fight lifestyle diseases. India defeated Oman to secure third place and win the bronze medal in the CAFA (Central Asian Football Association) Nations Cup 2025. The match was held at Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan. The game ended 1-1 in regulation time after Udanta Singh scored the equaliser for India. In the penalty shoot-out, Oman missed their first two attempts. Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu saved the final penalty, giving India a 3-2 victory. This was the first-ever win for India against Oman in an international football match. The victory marked a historic and memorable finish to India’s CAFA 2025 campaign. Uzbekistan won the gold medal and Iran won the silver.

The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 is set to begin on September 30, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The ICC released its flagship campaign film ‘Will to Win’, highlighting determination and perseverance. Minakshi Hooda (48 kg) and Jaismine Lamboria (57 kg) won India’s first-ever gold medals at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Liverpool. Jaismine defeated Paris Olympics silver medallist Julia Szeremeta of Poland 4-1, while Minakshi beat three-time world champion Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazakhstan 4-1. Nupur Sheoran claimed silver (80+ kg) and Pooja Rani bronze (80 kg). This became India’s best-ever performance at a Women’s World Championships held outside the country.

Recently, the Prime Minister congratulated the Indian Women’s Hockey Team for winning the Silver Medal at the Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025. The final was played in Hangzhou, China, where China defeated India 4-1 to lift the trophy. With this victory, China qualified directly for the 2026 Hockey World Cup to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands. This was China’s third Asia Cup title after 1989 (Hong Kong) and 2009 (Bangkok). India secured silver, while Japan won bronze.

Recently, the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex was inaugurated in Naranpura, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It was built at a cost of ₹825 crore, it is India’s largest and one of the world’s most modern sports complexes. The complex was developed as part of the vision to create world-class sports infrastructure in the country. Ahmedabad, already home to Narendra Modi Stadium and the upcoming Sardar Patel Sports Complex, is emerging as a major sports hub. The city will host the World Police and Fire Games in 2029 and is preparing to host the 2036 Olympics with 13 international tournaments lined up.

From September 28 to October 11, 2025, Ahmedabad is hosting the 11th Asian Aquatics Championship 2025 at Veer Savarkar Sports Complex. This is the first time the championship is held in India. The event is organized by Asia Aquatics and the Swimming Federation of India with support from the Sports Authority of Gujarat. More than 900 athletes from 29 countries will compete in swimming, diving, artistic swimming, and water polo. The championship serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Games.

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won silver medal in the women’s 48 kg category at the World Championships in Førde, Norway. She lifted a total of 199 kg with 84 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk. This was her first World Championship since 2022. It was also her second competition after finishing fourth at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The gold medal went to Ri Song-gum of Korea, who lifted 213 kg.
