A 70-foot iron statue of football legend Lionel Messi has been unveiled at Lake Town, South Dum Dum, Kolkata, West Bengal, by Sree Bhumi Sporting Club. The statue depicts Messi holding the FIFA World Cup trophy; final surface work and area preparations are ongoing. The statue is part of a tribute ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The project received support from West Bengal government authorities.

More than 24 countries will participate in the inaugural Commonwealth Kho Kho Championship, scheduled to be held from March 9 to 14 next year. The championship will be hosted in India, although the venue is yet to be finalised. The Kho Kho Federation of India is in discussions with several states to finalise the venue after receiving approval from Commonwealth Sport (CS). The event will feature 16 men’s teams and 16 women’s teams, reflecting equal participation across genders. The tournament will be organised on the lines of the first Kho Kho World Cup, held in January this year in New Delhi, which saw participation from 23 nations.

East Bengal Football Club (FC) won the inaugural South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Club Championship 2025. They defeated Nepal’s APF (Armed Police Forces) 3-0 in the final at Dasrath Stadium, Kathmandu. With this victory, East Bengal became the first Indian women’s club to win an international tournament.

The first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) logo, theme song, and mascot were unveiled at Late B. R. Yadav Sports Stadium, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. The Games are scheduled from 14 February 2026. Chhattisgarh is the first state to host these Games. Morveer is the official mascot of the inaugural edition. The mascot ‘Morveer’ combines ‘Mor’ (mine/our own) and ‘Veer’ (courage/valour), symbolising tribal pride and spirit. The Games are organised jointly by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India, Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations, and Chhattisgarh state committee.

Alpine SG Pipers, led by Indian Grandmasters R Praggnanandhaa and Anish Giri, won the Global Chess League (GCL) 2025 Season 3 title in Mumbai. They defeated defending champions Triveni Continental Kings in the finals, winning 4–2 in the first match and 4.5–1.5 in the second to secure their maiden GCL title.

Two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion PV Sindhu has been elected Chair of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Athletes’ Commission for the 2026–2029 term. As Chair, she will also serve as a member of the Badminton World Federation Council, giving players a direct voice in global badminton governance. Greysia Polii, a Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist, served on the Athletes’ Commission from 2021 to 2025 and retired in 2022. PV Sindhu will lead India at the 2026 Badminton Asia Team Championships in Qingdao, China.

Surya Charishma Tamiri won the Women’s Singles title at the 87th Senior National Badminton Championships in Vijayawada, defeating Tanvi Patri 17-21, 21-12, 21-14. Rithvik Sanjeevi S clinched the Men’s Singles title by beating Bharat Raghav in straight games, 21-16, 22-20. In Men’s Doubles, A. Hariharan and Ruban Kumar defeated Mithilesh Krishnan and Prejan 24-22, 21-17 to win the championship. Former champions Shikha Gautam and Ashwini Bhat won the Women’s Doubles title, beating Priya Devi Konjengban and Shruti Mishra 21-14, 21-18. Sathwik Reddy K and Radhika Sharma won the Mixed Doubles title with a 21-9, 21-15 victory over Ashith Surya and Amrutha P.

Indian tennis player Vaidehi Chaudhary won the Women’s Singles title at the W35 Solapur Tennis Tournament in Maharashtra. The 25-year-old, seeded sixth, defeated Japan’s Michika Ozeki in a three-set final, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, after losing the first set. In the semifinals, Vaidehi defeated national champion Vaishnavi Adkar to reach the final. This victory is her fourth career International Tennis Federation (ITF) singles title and her first since June 2024, when she won the W35 Taipei Formosa Cup in Chinese Taipei.

Fourteen-year-old Amieyra Khoslla won the Gold Medal in Youth Girls (Under-17) at the 29th National Sport Climbing Championship (NSCC) 2025 held in Bengaluru from 26–29 December. She competed in the bouldering discipline, showing excellent strength, technique, and calm mindset. In the qualification round on 27 December, she scored a perfect 100.0, topping all four bouldering problems. The championship was organised by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) with the General Thimayya National Academy of Adventure (GETHNAA).

Notes:
Former world billiards champion Manoj Kothari passed away at 67 in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu due to a massive cardiac arrest. Kothari won the World Billiards Championship in 1990. He was a 16-time State Champion in his career. In 2005, he received the Dhyan Chand Award, India’s highest lifetime achievement award in sports. In 2025, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India.
