World No.1 Grandmaster (GM) Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid) won the inaugural Chess Esports World Cup 2025. He defeated GM Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons) by winning both sets 3-1 in a best-of-three final. Carlsen lost only one game, in the first round of the second set. He earned a prize of US$ 250,000 and 1000 points for Team Liquid. GM Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons) beat GM Arjun Erigaisi (Gen.G Esports) 3.5-2.5 to secure third place. The Chess Esports World Cup 2025 was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced that the 4th Sub-Junior Under-15 Boys and Girls National Boxing Championships is scheduled to take place from August 7 to 13 in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The championship will feature more than 700 young boxers, including 400 boys and 300 girls aged 13–14 years, competing in 15 weight categories. In the recent Asian U-15 and U-17 Championships, Indian boxers won 43 medals and secured second place overall.

The 12th edition of The World Games is held from 7 to 17 August 2025 in Chengdu, China. The World Games are organised every four years since 1981 and feature sports not included in the Olympic programme. This edition includes 253 medal events across 34 sports and 60 disciplines. A 17-member Indian team is participating in five sports — Archery, Billiards, Roller Skating, Wushu, and Racquetball. India has been competing since 1981 and has won five medals so far — one gold, one silver, and three bronze. India’s only gold was won by Aditya Mehta in billiards in 2013.

Recently, Ramesh Budhial became the first Indian to win a medal in the Asian Surfing Championships, clinching bronze in the Open Men’s category in Chennai with 12.60 points. Gold in this category went to Korea’s Kanoa Heejae (15.17 points) and silver to Indonesia’s Pajar Ariyana (14.57 points). In the Open Women’s category, Japan’s Anri Matsuno won gold (14.90), Sumomo Sato silver (13.70), and Thailand’s Isabel Higgs bronze (11.76).

The Asia Rugby Under-20 Sevens Championship 2025 was held for the first time in Bihar at Rajgir Sports Complex. India won the bronze medal in the women’s category by beating Uzbekistan. China won gold in the women’s category, defeating Hong Kong. Hong Kong won gold in the men’s category by beating Sri Lanka. Malaysia secured men’s bronze by beating China. Four Bihar players – Gudia Kumari, Anshu Kumari, Alpana Kumari, and Aarti Kumari – were in India’s squad. The mascot was ‘Ashoka’, a rabbit.

The Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) mascot and logo were unveiled in Srinagar ahead of the inaugural water games. The festival will be held at Dal Lake, Jammu and Kashmir, from 21–23 August 2025. The official mascot is the Himalayan Kingfisher, representing adventure, eco-sports, and Kashmir’s natural beauty. The event is hosted by the Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) Sports Council, supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and Sports Authority of India (SAI).

North East United Football Club (FC) retained the Durand Cup title 2025. The final was held at Yuva Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata. North East United FC defeated Dimond Harbour FC with a 6-1 scoreline. Parthib Gogoi and Asheer Akhtar scored early goals to make it 2-0 by half-time. Other goals for North East United FC were scored by Alaaeddine Ajaraie, Andy, Thoi Singh, and Jairo Samperio. The victory highlights North East United FC’s dominance in Indian football tournaments.

Cheteshwar Pujara, India’s Test specialist, announced retirement from all forms of cricket on August 24, 2025. The 37-year-old last played a Test over two years ago, with his final First Class match being Saurashtra’s Ranji Trophy quarterfinal loss in February 2025. He played 103 Test matches for India, scoring 7195 runs at an average of 43.60, with 19 hundreds and 35 fifties. Pujara was the hero of India’s 2018–19 historic Test series win in Australia, scoring 521 runs and facing 1258 balls. He finished with 21301 First Class runs, 18 double hundreds, and three triple hundreds.

Madhav Gopal Kamath, 14, won the 2025 World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC), becoming the first Indian to win a major global Scrabble title. The tournament was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with 218 under-18 players from 18 countries. Madhav, the reigning national champion, won 21 out of 24 rounds and clinched the title in the penultimate round. Suyash Manchali, 15, from Bengaluru, placed fifth with 17 wins.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka won the US Open Tennis Women’s Singles title, beating Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6. Sabalenka successfully defended her crown and claimed her fourth Grand Slam title. Spanish-Argentine duo Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos won the Men’s Doubles title. They defeated British pair Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.
