Services won the 79th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy. The final was played at Dhakuakhana Stadium in Assam. Services defeated Kerala by 1–0 in a closely fought match. The winning goal was scored in the 109th minute of extra time. Striker Abhishek Pawar scored from a cross delivered by Shubham Rana. This victory marked Services’ eighth Santosh Trophy title. Services had also defeated Kerala in the 2023–24 season final.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar won gold in men’s 50 metre Rifle 3 Positions at Asian Shooting Championships 2026 in New Delhi with a world record score of 362.0. The event was held at Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range and he successfully defended his title. India achieved a clean sweep as Niraj Kumar won silver with 361.8 and Akhil Sheoran secured bronze with 343.5. The Indian team of Aishwary, Niraj and Akhil also won team gold, while Japan and Kazakhstan took silver and bronze. In junior category, Adriyan Karmakar won gold with 353.2 score.

The Indian Army defended its team championship title at the 6th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, winning a total of nine gold medals, including eight in the Gulmarg leg. Himachal Pradesh finished as runners-up after securing four gold medals on the final day of competition. The closing ceremony of KIWG 2026 was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council and managed by the Sports Authority of India at the Golf Course in Gulmarg. The first leg of the Games was held in Ladakh from January 20–26, 2026.

Ladakh conducted its first 21-km trail run at Pangong Tso, held at 13,862 feet in sub-zero temperature, and it was recorded in Guinness World Records as the world’s highest frozen lake half marathon. Pangong Tso is an endorheic, landlocked lake located in eastern Ladakh and extends into China’s Tibet region. The name means “high grassland lake” in Tibetan. It lies at about 4,350 meters and is one of the world’s highest brackish water lakes. The lake changes colours from blue to red and green.

Athlete Anant Rana made history by completing the ‘Full Ironman New Zealand’ triathlon in Taupo, New Zealand. He finished the triathlon in 11 hours and 50 minutes, well within the 17-hour time limit. Anant Rana is 33 years old and hails from Sonari, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. He is associated with the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation. The triathlon included 3.8 kilometres of swimming, 180 kilometres of cycling, and a 42-kilometre marathon run. He completed the swimming in 1 hour 28 minutes, cycling in 6 hours 19 minutes, and the marathon in 3 hours 46 minutes.

Shailesh Kumar won gold medal in men’s high jump T63 at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix, New Delhi. He achieved a best jump of 1.84 m, below his personal best of 1.91 m, but was satisfied as it was the season opener. Shailesh hails from Bihar and targets the Asian Para Games, focusing his training program on that event. At the 2025 World Championships, Shailesh attempted 1.94 m thrice, exceeding the championship record but missing the world record.

Tennis player Jannik Sinner won his first Indian Wells title by defeating Daniil Medvedev 7-6(6), 7-6(4) in the final played in California. The Italian produced a strong performance with 28 winners and 10 aces. With this victory, Sinner became only the third player to win all six hard-court ATP Masters 1000 titles, joining Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. The win was also his first title of 2026, extending his Masters 1000 winning streak to 11 matches, while Medvedev reached the final after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final but finished runner-up for the third time at Indian Wells

Morocco national football team have been awarded the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 title after the Confederation of African Football overturned the original final result. The decision followed a ruling that stripped Senegal of the title, granting Morocco a 3-0 administrative victory after Senegal walked off the pitch in protest during the final. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the result of the final match following a review of a walk-off protest by Senegal’s players, which occurred in stoppage time. Morocco were crowned champions, winning their first major tournament title on home soil, while Senegal was officially listed as forfeiting the final.

Anahat Singh won the Women’s Singles title at the Indian Open Squash in Mumbai, retaining her crown. She defeated second seed Egyptian player Hana Moataz 3-1 in the final, dropping only one game in the entire tournament. Abhay Singh won the Men’s Singles title at the same event, defeating fellow Indian Veer Chotrani 3-0 in just 32 minutes. Abhay displayed complete control and superior shot-making to claim a convincing victory in the all-Indian men’s final.

The World Athletics Indoor Championships 2026 ended with record-breaking performances and highest quality in history. United States topped the medal table with 5 gold, 7 silver, 6 bronze (total tally 324). Event recorded highest performance score of 49,516, surpassing 2022 record.
