The Indian Army defended its team championship title at the 6th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, winning a total of nine gold medals, including eight in the Gulmarg leg. Himachal Pradesh finished as runners-up after securing four gold medals on the final day of competition. The closing ceremony of KIWG 2026 was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council and managed by the Sports Authority of India at the Golf Course in Gulmarg. The Football for Schools (F4S) initiative was highlighted at PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dakshin Dinajpur, West Bengal. The Football for Schools programme is an initiative of Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It aims to support education, development and empowerment of children through football. It promotes life skills and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In India, it is implemented by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, with support from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Sports Authority of India (SAI).

Union Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya reviewed India’s preparations for the Asian Games 2026. The games will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026. More than 700 Indian athletes are expected to compete in more than 40 sports disciplines.

The inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) 2026 will be held from March 25 to April 6 across Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Sarguja in Chhattisgarh. The Games will feature seven medal sports: athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming, and wrestling; mallakhamb and kabaddi will be demonstration sports. The logo, theme song, and mascot ‘Morveer’ were unveiled on December 23, 2025; ‘Morveer’ combines ‘Mor’ (mine/our own) and ‘Veer’ (courage/valour), reflecting tribal pride.

India and New Zealand launched the Centenary Sports Cooperation Programme to celebrate 100 years of bilateral sporting relations. The centenary commemorates the 1926 Indian Army hockey tour to New Zealand, one of the earliest major sports engagements between the two countries. The programme focuses on six priority sports for collaborative development: rugby, rowing, canoeing, sailing, athletics, and cycling. New Zealand’s coach development framework will be integrated into the curriculum of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala. A Sports and Culture Week is proposed to showcase athletes, coaches, and indigenous sporting traditions from both nations.

Kipa Mero won the Gold Medal in Women’s Javelin Throw F12 Category at the 24th National Para Athletics Championships 2026 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. She broke her own National Record, demonstrating dedication, resilience, and sporting excellence. Techi Meta won the Silver Medal in the Women’s 400 metre T13 Category at the same championships.

The 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship 2026 starts from 1 April, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, and run until April 12. The tournament follows a division-based format to boost competition and player development. Division ‘A’ has 12 teams in four pools, with knockouts from April 9 and the final on April 12. Divisions ‘B’ and ‘C’ will be played in league formats from April 1–6 and April 1–4, respectively. All matches will take place at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium.

India finished its campaign at the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 with 16 medals (5 gold, 3 silver, 8 bronze). Vishvanath Suresh won gold (50 kg), defeating Daichi Iwai 5–0, ending India’s 5-year wait for a men’s Asian title. Sachin Siwach secured silver (60 kg) after a close 2–3 loss to Orazbek Assylkulov. Indian women boxers delivered a historic performance with 10 medals (4 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze). India ranked second overall, behind Kazakhstan (6 gold), but achieved the highest total medal tally.

Ayush Shetty won the silver medal at the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 held in Ningbo, China. He finished as runner-up, losing the final to Shi Yuqi with a score of 8–21, 10–21. Shi Yuqi secured the Men’s Singles gold, marking China’s first title in this category since 2017. Ayush Shetty created history by winning India’s first Men’s Singles silver in 61 years at the tournament. Earlier, he defeated defending champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the semifinals.

In tennis, Jannik Sinner won the Monte-Carlo Masters 2026 by defeating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(5), 6-3 in the final. With this victory, Jannik Sinner reclaimed the World No. 1 ranking for the first time since November last year. The match was played at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in France, on Court Rainier III in Monaco.
