Argentine tennis player Tomas Martin Etcheverry won his maiden ATP Tour title by clinching the Rio Open (ATP 500) title in Brazil. He defeated Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in the final with a scoreline of 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 to secure the biggest title of his career. This triumph marked Etcheverry’s first ATP crown after finishing runner-up in three previous tour-level finals. During the tournament, he also achieved a milestone by recording his 100th tour-level match win.

The Indian Army defended its team championship title at the 6th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, winning a total of nine gold medals, including eight in the Gulmarg leg. Himachal Pradesh finished as runners-up after securing four gold medals on the final day of competition. The closing ceremony of KIWG 2026 was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council and managed by the Sports Authority of India at the Golf Course in Gulmarg. The first leg of the Games was held in Ladakh from January 20–26, 2026.

Ladakh conducted its first 21-km trail run at Pangong Tso, held at 13,862 feet in sub-zero temperature, and it was recorded in Guinness World Records as the world’s highest frozen lake half marathon. Pangong Tso is an endorheic, landlocked lake located in eastern Ladakh and extends into China’s Tibet region. The name means “high grassland lake” in Tibetan. It lies at about 4,350 meters and is one of the world’s highest brackish water lakes. The lake changes colours from blue to red and green.

Jammu and Kashmir cricket team won its maiden Ranji Trophy title by defeating Karnataka cricket team at KSCA Rajnagar Stadium. J&K scored 584 in the first innings, while Karnataka managed 293. With this win, J&K joined teams like Vidarbha, Saurashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in recent title winners, showing wider growth of Indian domestic cricket.

The World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026 is held in New Delhi from 11–13 March 2026. It is a major international para-sports event bringing together about more than 250 athletes from different countries. Athletes from India, Russia, Nepal, Bhutan, Hong Kong, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Egypt are participating. India has the largest contingent with about 219 athletes competing in multiple classifications. The event will feature high-level track and field competitions, promoting global participation in para athletics.

Shailesh Kumar won gold medal in men’s high jump T63 at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix, New Delhi. He achieved a best jump of 1.84 m, below his personal best of 1.91 m, but was satisfied as it was the season opener. Shailesh hails from Bihar and targets the Asian Para Games, focusing his training program on that event. At the 2025 World Championships, Shailesh attempted 1.94 m thrice, exceeding the championship record but missing the world record.

Indian men’s hockey team forward Gurjant Singh announced his retirement from international hockey at the Hockey India Awards in New Delhi. Gurjant Singh is 31 years old and has had a career spanning nearly a decade, earning 130 international caps and scoring 33 goals. He was part of the Indian teams that won Olympic bronze medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. Gurjant also contributed to India winning gold at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, 2017 Asia Cup, and multiple Asian Champions Trophy titles. In 2021, he was awarded the Arjuna Award, one of India’s highest sporting honours.

The 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship 2026 starts from 1 April, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, and run until April 12. The tournament follows a division-based format to boost competition and player development. Division ‘A’ has 12 teams in four pools, with knockouts from April 9 and the final on April 12. Divisions ‘B’ and ‘C’ will be played in league formats from April 1–6 and April 1–4, respectively. All matches will take place at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium.

Pramod Bhagat won 1 gold and 2 silver medals at the Spanish Para Badminton International 2026 – Level 1. He secured gold in mixed doubles with Manisha Ramdass. He won silver in men’s singles after losing to Nitesh Kumar. Another silver came in men’s doubles with Sukant Kadam.

Notes:
The 7th National Sub-Junior (Under-17) Boxing Championship has started in Nagpur from 4 April. The event was inaugurated by Nitin Gadkari. The week-long tournament has attracted around 600 young boxers from across India, reflecting its growing importance in the national sports calendar. It also serves as a selection platform, where top performers will be chosen for the Indian Under-17 squad. Selected players will represent India at the Asian Boxing Championship to be held in Tashkent later this year.
