The first two tiebreak games ended in draws—first between Praggnanandhaa and Firouzja, then between Vachier-Lagrave and Firouzja. Praggnanandhaa won the third and final game against Vachier-Lagrave to claim the title. World Champion D Gukesh finished ninth with 4 points, drawing his last match with Fabiano Caruana. India won the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Under-19 Championship by defeating Bangladesh 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout. The final match was held on May 18, 2025, at Golden Jubilee Stadium, Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh. India showed great composure and converted penalties to win their second SAFF U-19 title, the first being in 2023. This win shows India’s growing strength in youth football in South Asia.

The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports plans a large talent identification drive across India. Citizens can upload videos of players’ performances on the National Sports Repository System (NSRS) portal. NSRS is a digital Management Information System (MIS) run by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). It operates under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. NSRS is part of the Khelo India – National Programme for Development of Sports Scheme. The portal provides digital solutions for athletes, coaches, sports scientists, training centers, federations, and administrators. It issues a unique Khelo India ID (KID) upon registration for athletes, coaches, and academies.

World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh achieved his first-ever classical chess win against former World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of the Norway Chess 2025 tournament. The 19-year-old Indian grandmaster turned the game from a losing position into a remarkable victory on Sunday. With this win, Gukesh became only the second Indian after Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa to defeat Carlsen in classical chess. Gukesh now holds the third spot on the Norway Chess 2025 points table with 8.5 points, just one point behind Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana.

Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame 2025, becoming the 11th Indian to receive this prestigious global honour. He is among seven cricketing legends, including two women players, selected in the 2025 inductee list. The ICC Cricket Hall of Fame recognises legendary players for their historic contributions to cricket across generations and countries. It was launched on January 2, 2009 by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in partnership with the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA).

Indian shuttlers recently delivered their best-ever performance by winning 27 medals at the Asian Para-Badminton Championship 2025 held in Thailand from 17th to 22nd June. The medal tally includes four gold, 10 silver, and 13 bronze medals, marking India’s highest total in the history of this championship. Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan won gold with a straight-sets victory over Ruthick Raghupathi and Manasi Joshi.

Veteran Indian hockey player Lalit Upadhyay has announced retirement after India’s last match in the European leg of the Federation Internationale de Hockey (FIH) Pro League 2024-25 against Belgium. He was part of India’s bronze medal-winning teams at both Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Lalit made his debut in the 2014 Hockey World Cup and played 183 senior matches, scoring 67 goals. Lalit received the Arjuna Award in 2021.

Recently, Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra won the Javelin Throw title at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 meet held in the Czech Republic. The 27-year-old two-time Olympic medallist secured the gold medal with a best throw of 85.29 metres. Douw Smit from South Africa finished second with 84.12 metres, and Anderson Peters from Grenada came third with 83.63 metres. This was Neeraj’s second straight victory after winning the Paris Diamond League, where he crossed 90 metres for the first time with a throw of 90.23 metres.
