Anahat Singh won the U-17 title at the British Junior Squash Open in Birmingham on January 6, 2025. She defeated Malika El Caracsi of Egypt in the final. Anahat had previously won Under-11 and Under-15 category titles. She became India’s youngest player at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Anahat has also won bronze medals at the Asian Games and Asian Championships.

The India Open 2025 badminton tournament concluded in New Delhi with outstanding performances. Viktor Axelsen of Denmark won his third India Open men’s singles title, defeating Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong China 21-16, 21-8. Axelsen previously won the India Open in 2017 and 2019. An Se-young of South Korea dominated the women’s singles final, defeating Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-12, 21-9 in just 39 minutes. Both champions are Paris 2024 Olympic gold medalists, showcasing their world-class talent.

The official logo and mascot for the 23rd National Para Athletics Championship 2025 were unveiled in Chennai. The event will be held from February 17 to 20, featuring over 1,700 para-athletes from across India. The championship highlights resilience, determination, and sporting excellence. The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Para Sports Association, is supporting the event.

Bihar became the first state to launch a Rural Cricket League. Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) under President Rakesh Tiwari is organizing the Bihar Rural League (BRL). The league is for players who haven’t played at district or state levels. Players aged 13 to 23 from villages, schools, and colleges can participate. Talent hunts will be held in all districts, forming 16 teams per district. 570 district-level matches will be played in a knockout format. Top players will enter the Super League with 38 teams and 79 matches. A total of 649 matches will be played with 10,000 participants.

Jasprit Bumrah won the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024. He also won the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2024 for taking 71 wickets in 13 matches. He became the fifth Indian to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Award after Dravid, Tendulkar, Ashwin, and Kohli. Bumrah led India to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, taking 15 wickets at an 8.26 average. He became the fastest Indian pacer to 200 Test wickets with a record-low sub-20 average. He ended the year as the No.1 ICC Test bowler with 907 rating points.

The Indian women’s U19 cricket team won the 2nd ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup, defeating South Africa by nine wickets. The final was played on 2 February 2025 at Bayuemas Cricket Oval, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The team, led by Niki Prasad, had earlier won the inaugural ACC Women’s U19 Asia Cup 2024 in Malaysia. The tournament, organised by the ICC, took place in Malaysia from 18 January to 2 February 2025.

Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa won the Tata Steel Masters title for the first time in his career. The 19-year-old from Chennai defeated world champion D Gukesh in a tiebreaker. Both players tied with 8.5 points after the 13th round. Praggnanandhaa came from behind to win 2-1 in the tiebreaker.

Former Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne retired after his 100th Test against Australia in Galle. He scored 36 and 14 in his farewell match, which Australia won by nine wickets. Karunaratne is the seventh Sri Lankan to play 100 Tests and scored 7,222 runs at an average of nearly 40. He captained Sri Lanka in 30 Tests (2019-2023), winning 12 matches. He led Sri Lanka to a historic 2-0 Test series win over South Africa in 2019. His 16 Test centuries as an opener is a Sri Lankan record, shared with Marvan Atapattu.

Kyrian Jacquet of France won his second consecutive tennis men’s singles title in India at the 2025 Delhi Open ATP Challenger. He defeated Billy Harris of Great Britain 6-4, 6-2 in the final. This was his second consecutive Challenger title, following his win at the 2025 Chennai Open Challenger. The 5th edition of the Delhi Open was played on a hard court at DLTA ground, New Delhi, from 10 to 16 February 2025.
