Nucelion Therapeutics and VeGen Bio Partner on CAR-T Therapy

Nucelion Therapeutics and VeGen Bio Partner on CAR-T Therapy

On 21 October 2026, Nucelion Therapeutics and VeGen Bio announced a partnership to transfer technology and manufacture and commercialise CAR-T cell therapies in India. The collaboration centres on VL-2511, VeGen Bio’s lead candidate, described as a first-in-class dual BCMA/CD19 autologous CAR-T therapy for multiple myeloma. Nucelion Therapeutics is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharat Biotech.

CAR-T Cell Therapy and VL-2511

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, commonly called CAR-T therapy, is a form of immunotherapy in which a patient’s T cells are modified to recognise targets on cancer cells. In autologous CAR-T treatment, cells are collected from the same patient who will receive the therapy. The modified cells are manufactured outside the body and then infused into the patient.

VL-2511 is designed to target BCMA (B-cell maturation antigen) and CD19. BCMA is a target associated with plasma cells, while CD19 is found on cells of the B-cell lineage. Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in bone marrow.

Technology Transfer and Manufacturing

Nucelion will be the technology-transfer and manufacturing partner for VL-2511 during clinical and commercial stages. The company is a cell and gene therapy contract research, development and manufacturing organisation (CRDMO). Its single-site manufacturing facility is in Genome Valley, Hyderabad.

The facility is designed to meet regulatory standards of India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The partners plan to optimise production processes, manufacturing yields and operational efficiency, with the stated objective of reducing production costs and widening patient access.

CAR-T Targets and Regulatory Context

CDSCO is India’s national regulatory authority for drugs and clinical trials. The US FDA regulates medicines and biological products in the United States, while the EMA evaluates medicines for the European Union. Facility design to meet regulatory standards does not itself constitute product approval or marketing authorisation.

Important Facts for Exams

  • CAR-T therapy uses genetically modified T lymphocytes to recognise selected targets.
  • Autologous cell therapy uses cells collected from the same patient receiving treatment.
  • BCMA stands for B-cell maturation antigen.
  • Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of plasma cells.

The partnership covers technology transfer and clinical- and commercial-stage manufacturing of VL-2511 in India. Nucelion’s facility is located in Genome Valley, Hyderabad.
