NITI Aayog and UNICEF Partner to Improve Nutrition in Aspirational Regions
NITI Aayog has signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) with UNICEF India to strengthen health and nutrition interventions in aspirational districts and blocks across the country. The partnership aims to improve maternal and child nutrition outcomes in underserved regions by combining the expertise and institutional capacities of both organisations. The agreement reflects the government’s continued focus on addressing developmental gaps in priority areas through collaborative and data-driven initiatives.
Focus on Aspirational Districts and Blocks
The agreement was signed by Rohit Kumar, Additional Secretary and Mission Director of the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme at NITI Aayog, and Arjan de Wagt, Deputy Representative at UNICEF India. The collaboration aims to support strategic interventions that enhance healthcare delivery and nutrition services at the grassroots level. Officials noted that the initiative will strengthen the implementation of health and nutrition programmes, particularly in areas where developmental indicators remain below the national average.
Strengthening Implementation Systems
The partnership seeks to promote multi-stakeholder engagement while improving governance and service delivery at the block level. NITI Aayog emphasised that convergence between government agencies, development partners and private stakeholders is essential to accelerate progress in nutrition outcomes. The programme will also focus on enhancing monitoring systems and promoting data-driven decision-making to improve policy implementation.
Role of UNICEF and CSR Participation
UNICEF India will contribute technical expertise through its IMPAct4Nutrition (I4N) platform. The initiative will engage businesses, public sector enterprises and industry associations to mobilise corporate social responsibility (CSR) investments for nutrition-related projects. These efforts are expected to support community-based programmes, strengthen local health systems and encourage private sector participation in social development.
