Mohammed Shami Retires from Test Cricket
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday, 6 November 2026, in an emotional video message on Instagram. Aged 36, he ends a 13-year career in the format.
Test career and future plans
Shami played 64 Tests for India, taking 229 wickets at an average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls. His final Test was the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval, London, in June 2023. His announcement came on the 13th anniversary of his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on 6 November 2013. He is sixth among India’s leading Test wicket-takers among fast bowlers.
Shami said he intends to continue playing white-ball cricket, including the Indian Premier League and domestic limited-overs competitions. He thanked his teammates, coaches, family, fans, the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Cricket Association of Bengal. Injuries contributed to his absence from international cricket; he has been out of the Indian team since the 2025 Champions Trophy.
