India Develops Beam Catcher for FAIR Project

India has developed a beam catcher for the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), a major international particle physics project at Darmstadt in Germany. The first of three indigenously built units reached the FAIR site on 7 August 2026 for installation in the Super Fragment Separator (super-FRS).

Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research

FAIR is an international accelerator-based research facility for nuclear and particle physics. It is being developed in Darmstadt, Germany, and uses high-energy ion beams for experiments on matter under extreme conditions.

India became a founding member of FAIR on 4 October 2010 by signing an international convention in Wiesbaden, Germany. India is the only non-European shareholder in FAIR GmbH, the company associated with the project.

Beam Catcher and Super Fragment Separator

The beam catcher is a critical component of the super-FRS, which is one of the major experimental systems at FAIR. It absorbs the remnants of primary heavy-ion beams in the energy range of 0.4 to 1.5 GeV per nucleon and helps produce radioactive beams for nuclear physics research.

The system weighs about 40 tonnes with shielding plates and contains graphite and hyper-pure copper absorbers inside a vacuum chamber operating at about 10-7 mbar. It is designed to absorb about 29 kJ of energy in a pulse lasting 50 to 100 nanoseconds, with peak energy densities reaching 300 J/g.

Indian Institutions and Manufacturing

The beam catcher was designed by the CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CMERI) in Durgapur, India. The first unit was manufactured and dispatched on 27 March 2026 from Trident Auto Components’ production facility in Kanpur, India.

The Bose Institute in Kolkata serves as the primary coordinator, nodal Indian institution, and designated shareholder in FAIR GmbH. The institute functions under the Ministry of Science and Technology as an autonomous research and development institution.

Funding and Collaboration

India’s contribution to the FAIR project is funded equally by the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Atomic Energy. The arrangement follows a 50:50 sharing pattern between the two Government of India departments.
