Ministry of Jal Shakti Releases Data Sharing Policy

Ministry of Jal Shakti Releases Data Sharing Policy

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti issued the Policy on Data Sharing, Interoperability and Stakeholder Access on 20 August 2026 in New Delhi. The policy is linked to the Sujalam Bharat Digital Public Infrastructure and applies to India’s rural drinking water sector.

Policy Framework for Rural Drinking Water

The policy creates a federated data-sharing framework for the Centre, States, Union Territories, Gram Panchayats, and approved sectoral stakeholders. A federated framework allows multiple administrative levels to share data through common rules while retaining their own records and responsibilities.

Data Standards and Digital Governance

The policy uses common identifiers, standardised metadata, interoperable registries, and secure digital services. These features support data privacy, cybersecurity, and machine-readable exchange across public systems.

Role of Gram Panchayats and Stakeholders

Gram Panchayats receive a larger role in participatory asset monitoring, grievance redressal, and service accountability under the policy. Authorised stakeholders can use purpose-based access mechanisms for AI-enabled analytics, geospatial planning, water-quality monitoring, and Digital Twins.
