Meghalaya Zoo Records First Stump-Tailed Macaque Birth

The Meghalaya State Zoo recorded its first successful birth of a Stump-tailed Macaque, or Macaca arctoides, in June 2026. The newborn was reported to be healthy and remained with its mother and troop under veterinary observation.

Stump-tailed Macaque

The Stump-tailed Macaque is a primate species found in South and South-East Asia. Its scientific name is Macaca arctoides, and it is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The species faces threats from habitat loss and human disturbance. It is one of the macaque species used in conservation breeding programmes in zoological parks.

Ex-situ Conservation

Ex-situ conservation refers to the protection of species outside their natural habitats. Zoological parks, captive breeding centres, and gene banks are common ex-situ conservation methods. The Meghalaya State Zoo’s breeding pair came from the Aizawl Zoological Park in Mizoram under an animal exchange programme. Such exchanges are used by zoos to maintain genetic diversity in captive populations.

Meghalaya State Zoo and Wildlife Management

The Meghalaya State Zoo is located in Shillong and functions under the state forest and wildlife administration. D. Sathiyan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife & Biodiversity) and Chief Wildlife Warden, is the senior wildlife authority in Meghalaya. Captive breeding of threatened species requires veterinary monitoring, habitat management, and controlled pairing of animals. Zoo breeding records are used in wildlife management and species conservation planning.
