Lakadong Turmeric is a turmeric variety from the Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya and received Geographical Indication status in 2024. It is known for curcumin content of about 7% to 12%, compared with 2% to 3% in many commercial turmeric varieties.

Lakadong Turmeric is linked to the Jaintia Hills region of Meghalaya, where it is cultivated in traditional organic farming systems. A Geographical Indication tag is used in India under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, for products associated with a specific place and quality.
Curcumin Content and Uses
Curcumin is the principal bioactive compound in turmeric and is used in food, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Lakadong Turmeric has higher curcumin levels than many other turmeric varieties, and this chemical profile is a key feature in its market demand.
Production, Farmers, and Processing
Around 14,000 farmers in 43 villages of the Lakadong area cultivate this turmeric in Meghalaya. On 19 June 2026, the North East’s largest organic spice processing unit was inaugurated in Bhoirymbong in Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya, for processing Lakadong Turmeric.
Market Value and Recognition
In 2024, raw Lakadong turmeric averaged INR 32.14 per kilogram, while dried and powdered forms averaged INR 179.47 and INR 266.66 per kilogram. The GI tag is used to protect the product from counterfeiting and to link value addition with local farming communities.
