Karlapat Sanctuary

Karlapat sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary in kalahandi district of Odisha. It is a 175 sq.km area in the moist deciduous forest eco-region. It was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1992. Recently, 6 elephants in the sanctuary died of haemorrhagic septicaemia. Experts are suspecting bacteria contamination (by Pasteurella multocida) in water bodies to be the cause of these elephant deaths. Last year, the disease claimed 40 buffaloes in Odisha.
