Jaishankar Reinforces India-Suriname Development Partnership

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Suriname during a three-nation Caribbean tour from 2 May to 10 May 2026. In Paramaribo, he handed over an India-assisted Agro Passion Fruit processing facility and co-chaired the 9th India-Suriname Joint Commission Meeting with Suriname’s Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva.

India-Suriname Bilateral Framework

India and Suriname maintain diplomatic and development cooperation through joint commissions, training programmes, and project-based assistance. India has extended soft loans under its Lines of Credit framework for infrastructure and strategic sector development in Suriname.

Agro Passion Fruit Processing Facility

The Agro Passion Fruit processing facility in Paramaribo was funded under a USD 1 million Small and Medium Enterprises grant announced in 2025. The facility is linked with value addition in agriculture and with local processing capacity in Suriname.

Areas Covered in the Joint Commission Meeting

The 9th India-Suriname Joint Commission Meeting covered defence and security, health, trade and commerce, infrastructure, education, sports, culture, traditional systems of medicine, and agriculture. The meeting was held in Paramaribo on 7 May 2026.
