India’s New Envoy to China Presents Credentials

India’s new Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, presented a copy of his credentials to Hong Lei, Assistant Foreign Minister and Director-General of the Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, in Beijing on 7 May 2026. The presentation of credentials is the formal diplomatic step that begins an ambassador’s assignment in the receiving state.

Diplomatic Credentials

A credential is an official letter from the head of state of the sending country to the head of state of the receiving country. In diplomatic practice, ambassadors present credentials after arrival in the host country, and the ceremony is linked to the start of their official tenure. The Indian Embassy in Beijing confirmed the event through an official post on X.

Vikram Doraiswami’s Diplomatic Profile

Vikram Doraiswami is a 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer. Before his posting in China, he served as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He has also served in Indian diplomatic missions in Hong Kong and Beijing. He is fluent in Mandarin, which is used in mainland China and is one of the major Chinese languages.

India-China Diplomatic Context

India and China have maintained diplomatic relations since 1 April 1950. The two countries share a disputed boundary in the western sector, central sector, and eastern sector of the Line of Actual Control. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in April 2020 and affected bilateral ties, trade discussions, and military-level talks.

Protocol and Courtesy Visits in Beijing

Before presenting credentials, Doraiswami paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Jintai Art Museum and to Rabindranath Tagore at the Indian Embassy in Beijing in the week of 5 May 2026. He was received in Beijing on 3 May 2026 by Charge d’Affaires Angeline Premalatha and Li Jianbo, Deputy Director of the Asia Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
