India-US Trade Deal Enters Final Stage

India and the United States are in the final stage of an interim trade pact under the first tranche of the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). As of 1 June 2026, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that 99% of the discussions for the first phase had been completed.

Negotiation Process

Chief negotiators from the United States and India are meeting in New Delhi from 1 to 4 June 2026. The US delegation is led by Brendan Lynch, and the Indian delegation is led by Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce. The talks are focused on finalising the legal text and related details of the interim pact.

Framework and Tariff Provisions

The framework for the interim trade agreement was agreed through a joint statement issued by India and the United States on 7 February 2026. The proposed arrangement seeks to recalibrate the US reciprocal tariff rate on Indian goods to 18%. The tariff environment changed after a US Supreme Court ruling on 20 February 2026 and a 10% tariff imposed by the US President on all countries from 24 February 2026.

Goods Covered Under the Proposed Pact

India has proposed tariff elimination or reduction on several US industrial goods and agricultural products. The list includes dried distillers’ grains, red sorghum, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, wine, and spirits. India also intends to purchase more than $500 billion worth of US energy products, aircraft, precious metals, and technology over the next five years.

India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement

The interim agreement is the first tranche of a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement between India and the United States. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor stated on 29 May 2026 that the deal is expected to be signed over the next few weeks and months.
