India-Thailand Maitree Exercise 2025

The 14th edition of the India-Thailand joint military exercise Maitree is scheduled from 1 to 14 September 2025. It will be held at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya. This exercise returns to Indian soil after five years. It aims to enhance the operational capabilities of both armies in counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban terrain under the United Nations mandate. The exercise reflects the shared commitment of India and Thailand towards global peace and security.
Background
- Exercise Maitree began in 2006 as an annual bilateral military exercise between the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army.
- The exercise alternates between locations in India and Thailand.
- It is designed to improve joint operational skills and encourage defence cooperation.
- The 2025 edition is important as it marks the continuity of strong defence ties between the two nations.
Objectives
The main goal is to sharpen company-level counter-terrorism skills in semi-urban and jungle environments. Both armies exchange best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures. The exercise focuses on increasing interoperability, planning, and executing tactical drills. It prepares troops for neutralising threats in complex urban warfare scenarios. The exercise also promotes camaraderie and mutual understanding between the soldiers.
Operational Details
The exercise involves joint training of infantry components. Typically, troops from each side include around 50 to 76 soldiers. Training covers counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations. Scenarios include semi-urban terrain and jungle warfare. The drills simulate realistic threats requiring coordination and rapid response. The training also aligns with United Nations mandates for peacekeeping and security operations.
Defence Cooperation between India and Thailand
India’s Act East Policy complements Thailand’s Act West Policy, strengthening bilateral ties. Both countries cooperate in international forums like ASEAN, BIMSTEC, Mekong Ganga Cooperation, and the Indian Ocean Rim Association. Since 2012, a Memorandum of About on Defence Cooperation has enhanced collaboration. India participates in Thailand’s Ex-Cobra Gold military exercise as an observer. Joint initiatives include maritime patrols, staff talks, and expert exchanges.
Historical Locations
Exercise Maitree has been conducted at various locations alternating between India and Thailand. Some notable venues include Krabi and Chachoengsao in Thailand, and Bakloh and Umroi in India. The 2024 exercise was held in Tak Province, Thailand. These exercises have progressively expanded in scope and complexity, reflecting growing defence ties and operational readiness.
