India Exports Akash Air Defence System to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan

India exported the Akash air defence system to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan as of 1 October 2026. Akash is an indigenous short to medium-range surface-to-air missile system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited.

Akash Air Defence System

Akash is a surface-to-air missile system used for air defence against aerial threats. It is designed to engage fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, guided munitions, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The system uses passive and active radars for target detection and engagement.

Export Customers and Production Base

Armenia was the first foreign customer for the Akash system and acquired multiple batteries. Tajikistan and Turkmenistan became later export destinations for the system. Production of Akash has stabilised, and the system continues to be procured for the Indian Armed Forces.
