Tamil Nadu Allocates ₹44,527 Crore for School Education

Tamil Nadu allocated ₹44,527 crore to the School Education Department in its maiden budget for the financial year 2026-27. Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson presented the budget on 5 August 2026, and the allocation placed school education among the largest spending heads in the state budget.

Tamil Nadu School Education Budget

Tamil Nadu is a southern Indian state with Chennai as its capital, and its School Education Department manages government schools, teacher recruitment, and school infrastructure. Super Clean, Super Campus Programme

The first phase covers a large number of schools under the state education system.

Modernisation of State-run Schools

The budget earmarked ₹300 crore for the modernisation of 3,734 state-run schools in Tamil Nadu. Modernisation in school budgets usually includes repairs, classroom upgrades, toilets, drinking water facilities, and other infrastructure works. Tamil Nadu has a long history of state involvement in school education, and government schools form a major part of the public education network in the state.
