India Adds Five Sites to UNESCO Tentative List

India added five new properties to the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage on 29-30 September 2026. The addition raised India’s total number of properties on the Tentative List to 78.

UNESCO Tentative List

The UNESCO Tentative List is the inventory of properties that a State Party intends to nominate for World Heritage status in the future. A property must first be placed on the Tentative List before a formal nomination dossier can be submitted to UNESCO.

New Indian Additions

Four of the five newly added sites are in Madhya Pradesh. The additions include the Buddhist murals of Bagh Cave Paintings, the Group of Temples of the Chambal Valley, the Gupta-era Udaigiri Caves, and the tribal legacy of Ginnorgarh.

Sites of Satyagraha

The fifth addition is a serial transnational proposal titled Sites of Satyagraha. This proposal links India and South Africa and contains nine components in total. The Indian components of Sites of Satyagraha include Mahatma Gandhi Satyagraha Smarak, Sabarmati Ashram, Mani Bhavan complex, Harijan Sevak Sangh complex, Sevagram Ashram, Aga Khan Palace, and Gandhi Smriti residence. The South African components include Pietermaritzburg station and Phoenix Settlement.

World Heritage Process

A site on the Tentative List is not a World Heritage Site. UNESCO evaluates nominated properties after the State Party submits a complete nomination file and supporting documentation.
