New Moth Genus Found in Western Ghats
A new genus and species of tiger moth, Antaram idukki, was discovered in June 2026 in the Idukki district of Kerala in the southern Western Ghats. The moth belongs to the subfamily Arctiinae and the family Erebidae, and its description was published in the Journal of the Lepidopterists’ Society.
Western Ghats Moth Diversity
The Western Ghats is a biodiversity hotspot that extends along the western edge of India and includes parts of Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Goa. Moths belong to the order Lepidoptera, which also includes butterflies, and many species are identified through wing pattern, antennae, and genital morphology.
Antaram idukki: Taxonomy and Features
Antaram is a newly described genus known only from Idukki. The genus name is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “difference”, and the species is distinguished by a unique combination of external and genital morphological characters. Scientists have recorded the larval host plant and life history of Antaram idukki as unknown. The species has been described as extremely rare, and habitat degradation is a recorded concern in its known range.
Other Recent Moth Discoveries in the Western Ghats
A new species of forester moth, Mimeusemia kali, was discovered in Karnataka’s Kali Tiger Reserve in June 2026 by scientists from the Zoological Survey of India, Pune. The species was described in the international journal Zootaxa, and it is the first addition to the genus Mimeusemia in nearly 30 years. In November 2025, 90 new moth species were documented in Maharashtra’s Melghat region, and the total number of moth species recorded in the district reached 250.
